BYU Young Authors Academy
July 13, 2020 - July 18, 2020
Find yourself dreaming of the day you see your name in print for the first time? Spend your time either writing or thinking about what you’re going to write next?
Come to BYU July 13–18! Talk with local and nationally recognized authors, get your writing reviewed by your peers, meet and work with BYU English department faculty, stay in BYU campus housing, get your books signed by acclaimed authors and illustrators, take unique small-group writing courses, and spend a week with other students who love young adult literature and want to see their name on a cover, like you.
YAA Author Lineup for 2020 TBA
BFYR Authors for 2020 include: Grace Lin, Elizabeth Partridge, Julie Berry, Kate Messner and more! Attendees will get the opportunity to meet these authors and ask them questions.
Check out the Writers Block electives for this year! You will sign up for two electives when you register:
Publishing the Writer in You: Love to write, but never quite satisfied with the way it turns out? We will help you learn to polish your writing so it says exactly what you want it to say. You’ll learn refining techniques that will make your writing stand out, with special attention to grammar and mechanics.
A World of Pure Imagination: Do you imagine knights and dragons, spaceship and far-off planets, the apocalypse, ghosts, or strange islands with magical properties? Get ready to invent a completely new world populated with creatures from your imagination! You’ll learn from science fiction and fantasy authors who’ve been successful in creating their own unique universes through writing.
Write Your Story: Sometimes real life can be stranger than anything we could imagine. And true stories, told well, still require creativity. We will delve into character development, creating scene stealing scenes, drama and find humor as we look into our own life experiences. Who knows? Maybe you’ll find that you are your new favorite character.
Chapter One: Creating Believable Characters: Creative writers need believable characters to people their poetry or prose. In this workshop learn how to use dialogue, actions, and descriptions to create dynamic characters–whether flawed, high-flown, comical, snobbish, bumbling, or spirited, or something in between. We’ll rely on historical and modern examples, as well as literary and pop culture examples, to expand our character repertoire.
This camp focuses on children’s and young adult literature. We invite students who are ages 14–18 to join us for this weeklong camp that corresponds with BYU’s Symposium on Books for Young Readers.
If you love writing and your dream is to become a published author, then this camp is for you!
